During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
