Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
